U.S. Imposes Sanctions on Vice President of Nicaragua

Image result for rosario murilloRecently the U.S. has urged sanctions on Nicaragua's vice president Rosario Murillo and has blamed her of corruption. Rosario Murillo has also violated human rights abuse. Rosario has held influence over a youth organization that the US stated seemed to have joined in judicial killings, torture, and kidnapping. Rosario and her husband Daniel Ortega have been ruling Nicaragua for over a decade. Rosario has been controlling police and the youth wing of the Sandinista liberation front. The US Treasury said it was using a new executive order issued by US President Donald Trump to punish Ms. Murillo, accusing her of undermining Nicaragua's democracy. The sanctions will ban US individuals, banks and other entities from carrying out transactions with the pair, who will also have any assets that fall under US jurisdiction frozen. Nicaragua has been through huge upheaval this year. In April, anti-government protesters demanded that the socialist president, Mr. Ortega, step down over unpopular pension reforms. However, he refused to negotiate and instead sent in the security forces.
Hundreds were then killed in the space of weeks.

Chinese New Year's: Then and Now

The Chinese New Year, or Spring Festival as it’s been called since the 20th century, remains the most important social and economic holiday in China. Originally tied to the Lunar Chinese calendar, the holiday was a time to honor household and heavenly deities as well as ancestors. It was also a time to bring the family together for feasting. With the popular adoption in China of the Western calendar in 1912, the Chinese joined in celebrating January 1 as New Year’s Day. China, however, continues to celebrate the traditional Chinese New Year. Significantly, younger generations of Chinese now observe the holiday in a very different manner from their ancestors. For some young people, the holiday has evolved from an opportunity to renew family ties to a chance for relaxation from work.

The Ancient Chinese Calendar
The ancient Chinese calendar, on which the Chinese New Year is based, functioned as a religious, dynastic and social guide. Oracle bones inscribed with astronomical records indicate that it existed at least as early as 14th century B.C. when the Shang Dynasty was in power. The calendar’s structure wasn’t static: It was reset according to which the emperor held power and varied in use according to the region.

The Chinese calendar was a complicated timepiece. Its parameters were set according to the lunar phases as well as the solar solstices and equinoxes. Yin and yang, the opposing but complementary principles that make up a harmonious world, also ruled the calendar, as did the Chinese zodiac, the cycle of 12 stations or “signs” along the apparent path of the sun through the cosmos. Each new year was marked by the characteristics of one of the 12 zodiacal animals: the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig.

The Traditional Chinese New Year
The Chinese New Year period began in the middle of the 12th month and ended around the middle of the first month with the waxing of the full moon. Observance of the New Year period was traditionally divided into New Year’s Eve and the early days of the new year.

Traditionally for the Chinese, New Year was the most important festival on the calendar. The entire attention of the household was fixed on the celebration. During this time, business life came nearly to a stop. Home and family were the principal focuses. In preparation for the holiday, Cleaning was also meant to appease the gods who would be coming down from heaven to make inspections. Ritual sacrifices of food and paper icons were offered to gods and ancestors. People posted scrolls printed with lucky messages on household gates and set off firecrackers to frighten evil spirits. Elders gave out money to children. In fact, many of the rites carried out during this period were meant to bring good luck to the household and long life to the family – particularly to the parents.

Most important was the feasting. On New Year’s Eve, the extended family would join around the table for a meal that included as the last course a fish that was symbolic of abundance and therefore not meant to be eaten. In the first five days of the New Year, people ate long noodles to symbolize long life. On the 15th and final day of the New Year, round dumplings shaped like the full moon were shared as a sign of the family unit and of perfection.

Evolution of Chinese New Year
The Western-style Gregorian calendar arrived in China along with Jesuit missionaries in 1582. It began to be used by the general population by 1912, and New Year’s Day was officially recognized as occurring on January 1. Starting in 1949, under the rule of Chinese Communist Party leader Mao Zedong (1893–1976), the government forbade the celebration of the traditional Chinese New Year and followed the Gregorian calendar in its dealings with the West. However, at the end of the 20th century, Chinese leaders were more willing to accept the Chinese tradition. In 1996, China instituted a weeklong vacation during the holiday giving people the opportunity to travel home and to celebrate the new year.

In the early 21st century, many Chinese families spent a significant amount of their discretionary income celebrating the Spring Festival with traditional symbols and food. They also spent time watching the televised Spring Festival Gala: an annual variety show featuring traditional and contemporary singers, dancers and magic demonstrations. Although the rites of the holiday no longer had religious value, people remained sensitive to the zodiacal animals to the extent that they considered what, for example, a year of the rat might mean for their personal fortunes or for a child born at that time.

A change in attitude toward the Chinese New Year has occurred in China’s young people, with Chinese college students reporting that they prefer surfing the Internet, sleeping, watching TV or spending time with friends to celebrating with family. They also reported not liking traditional New Year food such as dumplings and glutinous rice pastry. For some members of the younger generation, the holiday has evolved from an opportunity to renew family ties to a chance for relaxation from work.

Discussion Question:

  1. How do you celebrate New Year’s?
  2. What was most interesting?

Louisiana Suspect Apprehended After Killing Five

This past Saturday, January 26th, marked the death of five innocent people in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Dakota Theriot was currently in a relationship with 20-year-old Summer Ernest. At the time, he was staying with her family for several weeks. Around 9 p.m., Dakota killed his girlfriend Summer, her father Billy Ernest and her brother Tanner. Theriot then drove to his family's house and killed his mother, Elizabeth and his father, Keith.

He then proceeded to drive to his grandma's house, where he was apprehended and arrested by local authorities without any other incidents occurring. His motives are still unknown, but he was kicked out of his parent's house a few weeks before their murder over his excessive use of drugs.

He is now in custody and awaiting trial on five counts of murder in varying degrees.

In my opinion, this is another tragic loss due to gun violence. It's unfortunate that somebody with clear mental issues and who constantly used drugs had access to a gun and was able to use it to kill innocent people.

Questions:

1) What do you think proper punishment is for Dakota? Do you believe he deserves the death penalty? Why or why not?

2) What could have been done to prevent this and other similar shootings? Do you think more gun control is necessary?

3) What do you think pushed Dakota over the edge and caused him to kill five people? Would increasing mental health help or gun control do more good?

Gay Couple Rejected by Texas Venue

a close up of a fence: Image: The Venue at Waterstone in Texas is under fire for refusing to serve a gay couple.
(Venue in which the couple wanted to get married at)

A newly engaged gay couple, Aaron Lucero and Jeff Cannon had gone to Texas to tie their final knot by getting married at a special place. They thought they had found the most perfect spot, which was the venue at Waterstone in Celina, just north of Dallas. Just before their planned tour of the venue they were told that they couldn't get married there due to the owners high held religious beliefs. The couple had received an email from the venues owner in which he had explained how he believed the bride of Christ is joined to the groom and so he wouldn't violate his conscience by letting the couple get married there let alone let them enter the venue. Both Lucero and Cannon were shocked as they were thinking, "it's 2019." The couple didn't think they had to tell people that it was a same-sex wedding, they just thought a wedding is a wedding.

Questions:

1) Do you think it was wrong of the venues owner to let his beliefs get in the way?

2) Should the couple have had the chance to get married at the venue?

3) In your opinion, would you have done the same thing as the venues owner?

Israel Targets Syria and Launches Airstrikes

Missiles flying into the sky near international airport, in Damascus, Syria.      On Monday the 21st of January, Israel decided to launch airstrikes at Syria. Israel sent out a message to Syria and said that the military was only targeting Iranian forces and warned Syria not to set fire at Israeli jets. Israel promised that they would continue to act against Iran's presence in Syria. The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 11 were killed in this strike and 2 of them were Syrian nationals. This attack was described as the most intense and violent attack against the regime forces since May 2018. Last May Israel carried out a large scale attack on Iranian targets in Syria. Syrian air defenses destroyed more than 30 cruise missiles and guided air bombs in the course of repelling the attack. Iran was growing impatient to fight Israel and promised to fight the Zionist regime. Israel's military is an elevated alert in the north and ski area in the Golden Heights has been closed. There are no other restrictions on civilian movement.

    Discussion Questions:
Do you think Iran will attack Israel soon?
What should Israel do next to defend them selves?
What will Iran do if Israel decides to attack again?

traffickers use faith to lure Nigerian Women into prostitution

A high priest in Nigeria told a women that he had gotten a vision from God showing that she would take a trip over seas. The women was convinced that that was part of her near future, so the priest told her that he had a sister in Europe and she could make sure that she would be able to cross over and into Europe. The women agreed to go, and with doing so she also agreed to pay back the money the Priests sister would spend on her transportation. one the women got to Europe she was told that she had to pay $45,000, this was more than she imagined it would be. she was also told that the only way to pay off her debt was to become a prostitute. For the next 3 years she live was a living hell. With 10-15 men to attend in one night, and at times, more than one at a time her body was always in pain. After the 3 years of prostitution the women finally paid back her debt, got her passport back, and went back home to Nigeria. Once back at home the women reported the priest and his sister, who are now on trial, but came to them as a surprise for they both thought that she was dead. *this is a true story. And it still happens today.

discusion questions
1) If you were in the same situation as this women, do you think you would survive the 3 years of pay back?
2) Is there anyway, do you think, that human trafficking can be stopped one day? How?
3) There are many dirty cops in our system, do you think that they play a big part of keeping the trafficking on the down low?

Drone Sighting Disrupts Major U.S. Airport

On January 22, 2019 at approximately 5pm, the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) received two reports from incoming flights in Newark and stated that a drone had been sighted at about 3,500ft above Teterboro, New Jersey. An air pilot, told air traffic control that the drone came within 30ft (9cm) of his aircraft. Even though he was flying through Teterboro airport, a nearby private facility, the officials grounded Newark International flights as a precaution to delay the flight. Although, drones had been said to be a large considerable menace for the Aviation industry, it has affected the travel of an estimated 140,000 people between the month of December 19th through the 21st. At least two people were arrested over this assault but they were released without charge due to no other arrests being made after the incident. However, officials say they may suspect hundreds of drones that aren't yet registered by their owners.

Discussion Questions

1. How can a drone cause so much dramatic chaos?

2. How will the police catch the drone menace?

3. What are the limitations for these drones in order to prevent Airport disruption?

Europe Plans on Mining the Moon for Natural Resources

The European Space Agency is planning to mine for Water and Oxygen off of the moon by the year 2025. To start their plan they signed a 1-year contract with the European aerospace company, Ariane group, to allow them to start exploring Lunar soil. Through this Europe believes  that mining all the Water and Oxygen, found in the Goliath Layer, it will make it easier in the future for humans to live on the moon. This will also allow them to create rocket fuel allowing more expeditions further into space. With this Europe has made a collaboration between Aerospace scientist and technicians in France, Germany, and Belgium. As of right now, this is only in the research phase, and in the future Europe hopes to use an Ariane 64 rocket to send mining equipment to the moon.

Discussion Questions
1) Do you think that all this time and resources being put into this project are a good use of Europe's time and resources?
2) In the future do you think that people will be able to live on the moon? If so, in how many years?
3) In the future, do you think that Europe will actually go through with this?

A court in Egypt sentenced an Egyptian TV presenter to 12 months in prison due to an interview with a gay sex worker. The presenter, Mohammad al-Gheity was found guilty by an Egyptian court for encouraging immorality in Egypt. The interview aired in August 2018 and al-Gheity was fined a flat fine of $170. However, from there a private lawyer pressed charges resulting in the 12 month sentence. In Egypt homosexuality is not illegal but it is highly frowned  upon buy the conservative Muslims that make up most of the population. Also, in 2017, a group of Egyptians were arrested for raising a LGBTQ+ rainbow flag in a central square. The history of homophobia in Egypt has truly shone through in this unfair case.

Discussion Questions:
1. Should al-Gheity go to prison?
2. Was his crime truly encouraging immorality?
3. Should homosexuality be negatively portrayed by the government?

Border Security and Immigation

Border Security / Immigration - Gabriel Mack

Border Patrol: crowd confronts agents - The San Diego Union-Tribune
Donald Trump is looking to approve a bill from congress to fund $5 billion for his wall.
Trump said in an interview in November, “I don’t do anything … just for political gain.
But I will tell you politically speaking, [this] issue is a total winner.
People look at the rush to the police, they look at the rock throwers and really hurting,
three Border Patrol folks - I think that it’s a tremendous issue …
So we have to have border security.”
The rock throwers Trump is referring to is the Illegal Immigrants who
Border Patrol agents responded to with tear gas.
Border Patrol agents used the tear gas to control migrants who get injured from
rock throwers. In a statement posted on Facebook by the U.S. Department of Homeland
Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen thanked officers and
agents in San Ysidro “who, under tremendous strain, used professionalism and restraint
to ensure that no one was injured as they were attacked themselves.”

Take the San Ysidro incident in November last year for instance when 1,000 Mexicans
tried to unlawfully enter the US. The C.B.P. noted the high prevalence of criminals
in the group which was too overwhelming Mexican Law Enforcement to deal with.
The caravan attempted to cross the border through various vehicle lanes and border fences.
The group committed dozens of assaults on agents and officers at the ports of entry
including rock throwing against four agents. The measures the U.S. Border Patrol used
was effective and prevented the situation from quickly with less-lethal device deployments.
Advancements in technology the dropped use of firearm use from 55 incidents in
2012 to just 15 incidents in 2018.

While it might seem hard to find a compromise between Border Security
and sensible immigration policy there are some solutions that can help.
Some solutions could be to strengthen border security efforts while also
make legal immigration an easier process.
This way much more well intentioned immigrants can enter the US.
And better border security efforts will reduce the amount of drugs such as
Methamphetamine and Fentanyl from illegally entering the country,
and keep out potentially dangerous individuals.
Even Trump said in a POLITICO interview that he has a “big heart of DACA,
I want to be able to keep them. But if the court rules properly,
there will be no problem with DACA and we’ll get everything solved.”
Trump is still willing to take this compromise to help the students who entered
the U.S. illegally, but that would be up to the supreme court to decide.

The Reasons Behind the Caravans in Mexico

Image result for caravans in mexico
(Borderline between Mexico and the U.S. )

On Tuesday, January 15, 2019, a new caravan will be formed by people in Honduras and Guatemala crossing illegally into Tijuana as a hope to better their lifestyle after crossing to the United States. Trump sees the caravans as more reason for him to build his wall as a solution to keeping them out of the United States. The Mexican president is also trying to prevent the migrants from entering Mexico illegally as for its chaos for both Mexico and the United States. People in Honduras and Guatemala see it as a successful way of getting to the United States since nobody is returning back to their country, as for they believe they will have the same luck and not get deported without seeing the risks they are taking.

Questions

1. Are caravans actually making a change for the migrants? Is it worth joining a caravan?

2. Should Trump build the wall? Why or why not?

North Korea's Kim continues visits to China's Xi

Article link                        North Korean President Kim and his wife visit China. Source: BBC

President Kim Jong-un of North Korea has been invited by and will be visiting Chinese President Xi Jinping. He will spend the next two days in China including his 35th birthday, which is today. Last June President Kim met with President Trump for the first time and a second meeting will likely come this year. Mr. Kim had tight security upon his exit from North Korea, which included preventing people from seeing the train he took to Beijing. This will be Mr. Kim's fourth visit to China in the past year after none in his first six years as North Korea's president. He may be exploring diplomatic and economic relations beyond what South Korea or the United States can offer. One goal that President Trump has is to denuclearize the Korean peninsula.

Discussion Questions:
1. Do you see President Kim having diplomatic relations with China, the U.S. or both in the future?
2. Is the goal to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula a good one and what else should President Trump focus on in North Korea?
3. Would meetings involving China, North Korea, South Korea, Japan, and the U.S. make sense or is it better if the nations interact with each other bilaterally?

South Africa may evolve politically in 2019

Article link                        South African president Cyril Ramaphosa. Photo by Rajesh Jantilal

2019 will mark the 25 year anniversary of the first free elections in South Africa, an era which has been dominated by the African National Congress (ANC) political party. Last year Cyril Ramaphosa replaced Jacob Zuma as president after the nation endured nine years of corrupt rule under Zuma. Education and healthcare are weak while many still live without electricity or sanitation services. People are frustrated by the inequality that remains in South Africa and the lack of improvement of standards of living for the average South African under 25 years of ANC rule. The Democratic Allinace, a more conservative party, is the main challenger to the ANC, which is expected to narrowly maintain control of the government this year. South Africa is a nation of 55 million people and one quarter of the electorate is under 30 and too young to remember life under apartheid, which was a system of racial segregation that existed from 1948-1994.

Discussion Questions
1. What should the new president Cyril Ramaphosa focus on to gain the support of the people of South Africa?
2. Does the African National Congress, the party that led South Africa away from its racist apartheid system, deserve more time to nourish the growth of South Africa's economy?
3. How can a nation like South Africa with limited government funding improve its education and healthcare systems?

What may happen in the Middle East this year

Article link
Source: Al Jazeera

It seems unlikely that 2019 will bring peace, democracy, or stability to the Middle East. In mid December President Trump removed 2,000 U.S. troops from Syria and America will likely continue being the major nation involved from outside of the region. Major issues in 2019 will be the conflicts in Syria and Yemen, the Gulf crisis, the U.S. confrontation with Iran, and the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Without the U.S. in Syria, a greater burden will fall on Turkey, which is competing with Russia and Iran for influence. In Yemen the Saudis and Houthis continue fighting their four year war with no end in sight. The blockade on Qatar by four countries in the region will also likely continue in 2019. After the U.S. imposed two rounds of sanctions on Iran in 2018, the potential for a U.S./Iran conflict has increased. The U.S. has already moved its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, which will be the capital of Israel and cut funding to Palestinian refugees. In 2019 the Trump administration focus will workin on improving the Arab-Israeli alliance. Three alliances will be competing for influence to determine the future of the Middle East.

Discussion Questions
1. Was it a good idea for the U.S. to pull troops out of Syria in December? Why or why not?
2. Is the U.S. at risk of war with Iran given the sanctions and increasing tensions in 2018?
3. With Israel imposing its will in 2018, what will likely happen with Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza in 2019?

US & China can collaborate to protect the environment and international security

Article link
Source: Doug Mills, New York Times

Robert Rubin, the former Treasury Secretary and head of the Council on Foreign Relations argues that collaboration between the U.S. and China is critical to make progress on the issue of climate change and protecting the world from the dangers of nuclear weapons. The U.S. and China are the two largest economies in the world and have the opportunity invest in clean energy technology and adopt strict environmental protection rules. Two big barriers to progress are President Trump's status as a climate doubter and the ongoing trade war between the U.S. and China. Additionally with countries like North Korea and Pakistan becoming growing nuclear threats and the history of global conflicts, the risks posed by nuclear weapons must be considered carefully.

Discussion Questions
1. Can two countries with political and economic differences overcome their disagreements and collaborate to solve major international challenges?
2. What do you believe the U.S. and China should do to minimize the risks posed by nuclear weapons in the future?
3. How should nations like the U.S. and China act in the face of a massive global challenge such as global warming?
