Happy Sweet Sixteen! Would you like to vote?

Image result for voting boothIt was reported a few weeks ago by Rep. Ayanna Pressley that the age of voting should be lowered from 18 to 16. She states that maturity is out of the spectrum, and that at the "Beginning at the age of sixteen, young people are contributing to both the labor force and their local economies by paying income taxes, and yet are deprived of the opportunity to exercise their right to vote". Now, more and more political teams are promoting the lowering of the age to vote. This is not the first time a lawmaker has proposed to lower the voting age,  on March 7, 1970, Sen. Ted Kennedy did the same; in proposing the voting age to drop from 21 to 18, saying that it was unfathomable that young adults were drafted for war but could not vote. Oregon has already gone into the second phase of lowering the age, as legislators propose an amendment to the Oregon constitution; this is inspiring and promoting other states to do the same, and to further develop the idea for younger voters. With the 2020 election arising beyond the horizon, this could very well tips the scales on future voting.

1. What are your opinions on lowering the age to vote?
2. Would you want to vote?
3. Do you believe that paying taxes, and driving cars signifies that your mature enough to vote?
4. How much of an impact will young adults make to elections?

  1. Knowing how impulsive and uneducated teenagers are, this is simply a terrible idea. I don't believe I and others should be allowed to vote at this young age.

  2. I say that they should lower the voting age because teens are maturing faster. I wouldn't vote. Paying taxes and driving does signify maturity, but only if they are doing it correctly and not getting in trouble. If young adults study the information given then they will make a significant impact because they are giving their honest opinion. - Valeria Sanchez

  4. Voting age should not be lowered because students need to mature. I would not want to vote, because I don't feel a need to. Taxes do make you more mature and able to vote because they show that you are responsible enough. Young adults will not really change elections because their parents will tell them for who to vote for, only for the side with adults who have less kids.

  5. I think that young people having the right to vote will definitely impact future elections. Students at the age of around 16 are starting to get into politics and I do believe that they have the right to have their voice heard. Though there is some risk in maturity in terms of voting for what they think is best, there will always be a risk in maturity. Anyone no matter what age carries a risk in voting, and may not vote in all seriousness, but the vast majority of people take voting and human rights serious enough to have earned their right to vote at a younger age.

  6. I think that young people should have the chance to vote but there should definitely be a certain age limit like around the age of 16 or 17. Anything below this age could be too early or people at a young age might not able to be understand the whole process yet. I would want to vote if I believe there is a candidate that stands out to me. I think that young voters will have a huge impact on elections because young voters control the people that represent their country and impact other generations.

  7. Yes, I would want to vote because teens around the age 16-19 have come to the right mindset about what is going on around the world and how to react to it. :) - Rani Maharaj

  8. Many young adults don't want to vote because they don't really care or don't like the candidates that are running.

  10. I think that young people should be able to vote. We can be immature at some times, but we are the people that will living here in the future. Not the 80 year old people running for office

  11. I think that we young adults should be able to vote because we also have an opinion and with elections coming up younger voices will be represented because we control the next generation

  12. I believe that young adults like 15 and up should have that right to vote because they are mature enough to make decisions about their future president of the country.

  13. Lowering the age to vote in our day and age is the only way to be all inclusive in society. Society is progressing very fast and so are the people that contribute to it, which also includes young adults. Paying taxes and driving demonstrate an individual teens responsibility, leaving them to be considered to have the right to vote.

  14. I think that it’s a good idea, but not totally necessary. I would vote, and take it seriously, but don’t think that everyone would. I think that because we pay taxes, we have the right to vote and have a say with what happens to our money. I think that because there are so many people it would have a impact, but don’t know how big or small.

  16. I think that this is not a very bad idea because kids know a days know what’s going on with the voting. I believe sense the kids who usally vote have enough knowledge and want to them they can

  17. While it makes sense to give young people the opportunity to vote, I think the current age limit of 18 is better because adolescents may not understand the full process of voting and may not be mature enough to vote.
