Late last week, a good samaritan put 70 homeless people in a hotel to avoid the 20-25 below zero Chicago weather. These record-shattering temperatures quickly became life threatening and had already caused multiple deaths. The homeless encampment was heated by many portable propane tanks that were donated by generous citizens. Shortly after noon that day, one of the hundreds of propane tanks had exploded due to being too close to a space heater and caused a fire. City officials were forced to close the encampment and rushed to find shelter for the displaced homeless people. The Salvation Army prepared to welcome in all 70 of them, later getting notice that a good samaritan offered to put them all in a hotel and pay for the hotel costs. The identity of the good samaritan is still unknown. However, the fire department is cautioning people to not donate any more propane tanks for they are a fire hazard.
Discussion Questions:
1. Do you think the city should tax citizens in order to provide a better source of heating for all homeless encampments? Why?
2. Do you think it is the city's responsibility to house the homeless in extreme life-threatening temperatures like this? Why?
3. Do you think organizations such as the Salvation Army can do a better job with housing the homeless in these extreme temperatures before disasters strike? Why?

Yes, I do think it's the city's responsibility to house the homeless in such life threatening temperatures because it can not only save their lives but they would have a nice cozy place to be in for a bit which would make them very thankful. In a way, it should also be a no, like ya I feel bad for homeless people because I don't know how bad their situation is but maybe they should consider finding out a solution to help themselves in such situations because the city and the unknown guy won't always be there to help provide such comfort. :) - Rani M.
ReplyDelete1. I don't think they should tax the citizens much
ReplyDelete2. Yes because the homeless have it rough during the winter especially on a day like this
3. Yes, because then they could help out the city
I think it is the city's responsibility to house the homeless in extreme life-threatening temperatures like this. I think this because they people are within the city limits, so they are the city's responsibility.
ReplyDeleteYes, I believe that the city should be responsible to house the homeless by taxing others but at the same time, citizens should be taxed equally and all classes should be taxed the same amount in order to support the homeless. This would help save lives and leave people in less harmful situations to support their families and children but at the same time the government can only do so much to help until they are on their own and must support themselves.
ReplyDeleteI don't believe the city is responsible for putting the homeless in shelter due to the tempurature although it would be kind. The reason for them being in the street is not the citizen fault nor responsibility because they are in the streets normally because they choose to.
ReplyDeleteBy taxing the citizens everyone shares in the responsibility and housing homeless in extreme weather
ReplyDeleteI think cities should provide for the homeless. The homeless shouldn't be left in life threatening temperatures. Cities could do so much more for the homeless and help them.

The homeless should get a job instead of relying on others; the city should aid them with that, but it is not their job to house the homeless.
ReplyDeleteI think that it is the city's job to house homeless people during life-threatning situations but only during life threatening situations. other then that, I think that it is up to the homeless people to try and keep surviving on the streets

2- In my opinion, it is not the city's responsibility to house the homeless. Though it is generous of people to provide heaters and hotel rooms, most cities already provide homeless shelters. However, the homeless must be drug-free while living in these shelters. So, if they are still living on the street they most likely are either on drugs or they choose to live there.

DeleteI believe that the cities should provide homeless shelter for them when it is cold-brianaconlon
ReplyDeleteI do think that it is the city's responsibility to house the homeless in extreme life-threatening temperatures because it would save lives. But the homeless shouldn't just rely on others to keep themselves alive, I believe that they should also put the effort into moving themselves forward by looking for a job and getting themselves out of the bad situation.
ReplyDeleteI think cities should allow homeless shelters when its cold outside
ReplyDeleteI think that it is the city's responsibility to help out the homeless in those extreme life-threatening temperatures because of the deaths it has caused. I also think that they should have more shelters to keep the homeless warm and safe.
