Recently, a very chaotic protest was reported outside of the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York because of the inmates suffering for the last week with no power or the ability to be able to communicate with their attorneys or families. A congresswoman who had visited the Detention Center for the second time on Saturday had claimed and reported that the officials aren't taking the inmates situation serious enough. Nydia Velazquez reported, "After visiting MDC again today it is clear the officials there have disregarded the basic human rights of inmates". The clients with health problems have been suffering from the freezing cells without access to warm clothes or blankets because the jail officials have taken zero steps to provide them with the necessities they need to stay healthy. Similarly, the inmates are being treated just like living in the Ghettos during the Holocaust because they are suffering from scarce heat and lack adequate clothing and are also being weakened by exposure to the cold. Groups vowed to camp outside the facility in Brooklyn until conditions improve.
1.) Do you think officials should take this more seriously? Why or Why not?
2.) Is protesting beneficial in this case? Why or Why not?
2.) Yes, protesting is beneficial in this case because it can let more people about how the inmates are treated inside the jail.
ReplyDeleteMore initiative should definitely be taken in serious cases such as these. Not only are these inmates suffering, but all inmates in below freezing weather are also experiencing these conditions and protesting can help them and other inmates across the states
ReplyDeleteI believe officials should take this more seriously because the effect of loss of power affects people's lives. Not only are they in freezing weather with no communication to family. This can lead to death and extreme mental declines.
ReplyDeleteThe detention officials should have taken this issue more seriously because, their action of not making sure that the people in their care are surviving is rude and cruel by making people suffer in cold climates especially when there is no power and heat. To be honest, I don't think that protesting won't do any justice for the prisoners because it's just a waste of time for the people participating and change will only happen if the officials are being affected, in which their not. -Zachary Daniloff
ReplyDeleteThe detention facility should have taken this issue more seriously. Being an inmate should not mean that basic human needs should be taken away especially in the harsh weather they are facing.
ReplyDeleteYes, in this case I believe protesting is beneficial. People should know what the inmates are suffering from and that this isn't human respect/dignity. All people including inmates should be able to stay warm in these cold conditions.
ReplyDeleteThe detention facility and officials should take this issue much more seriously because the people under their care are suffering due to their negligence. It is cruel and inhuman to let inmates stay in cold conditions with limited ways to keep warm.
ReplyDeleteNo, Protest will not work for a correctional institution.
ReplyDeleteIt is important to protest because it will help get the message across about how they are being treated
ReplyDeletethey should take into account the peaceful protest opinion and at least have a statement on why they don't want to change. these people have a point in there protest and should have a point in whick inmates are being treated poorly in jail
