50 killed at mosques in New Zealand

50 people were killed at prayer during two attacks on mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. The shootings started with the Al Noor Mosque, where most of the victims were killed and injured, at 1:40 pm, and continued at the Linwood Islamic Centre. A 28-year-old Australian man, Brenton Tarrant, described as a white supremacist and member of the alt-right, was arrested by police and charged with the murders of the victims. The New Zealand Prime Minister and her cabinet have decided on changing the country's gun control laws. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern stated that the cabinet was "absolutely united" in its decision and that the shooting was "worst act of terrorism on our shores."
Memorials have been placed all over Christchurch and the world to mourn the victims.

Live New Update on Mosque shootings in New Zealand, CNN

1. How do you think New Zealand and other countries should deal with lax gun laws and gun violence?
2. What do you think of the attacks?
3. What can be done to prevent mass shootings, like this one, from occurring?

  1. (#2) I personally think that the attack was completely unnecessary and it that it should never happen anywhere to anyone no matter what race. Killing a total of 50 people with no valid reason and taking their lives is something that should never happen.

  2. I think that anytime someone dies no matter who you are it is very sad and attacks should not happen because no one will ever be satisfied with an attack someone or a lot of people are killed and that is a very sad thing.

  3. To prevent mass shooting I think kids in school should be taught the consequences of gun violence I also think New Zealand should make the age higher for people who want to own a gun because in New Zealand you can own a gun at the age of 16

  4. I think that countries where these things happen should create tighter rules and laws, and to find out why that person wants to but the gun before selling it to them. I think that these attacks are just hate crimes. These attacks are not 100% preventable, but they can be, hopefully, be prevented with stricter laws and rules.

  6. I think that the attacks were completely unnecessary and there should be more actions to prevent attacks like this. When someone goes to pray you expect it to be a safe space and shouldn't have to worry about your life being in danger. I think it is good that the Prime Minister is taking steps to more gun control for everyones safety. There should be more education on these problems to help prevent them in the future.

  7. I think that all countries should make stricter gun laws whether they have had mass shootings or not because these pointless mass shooting have been happenning way too much. This can possibly prevent many mass shootings from happening and make people feel safe where ever they are.

  8. i think they shouldn't sell fire arms at all and just maybe just pass a law with a consequence if they have one.

  9. I think that countries should have strict gun laws but not to the point where people can't buy one for protection. People should be background checked and guns should only be given to those who prove they can be safe and can handle one. The attack was completely unnecessary and there should be stricter actions taken against those involved. It's good that the Prime Minister decided to do something and people should be taught about the consequences of their actions.

  10. I think all countries should make strict gun laws regardless if they have a past of shootings or not, it is possible for shootings to happen anywhere. By creating more strict gun laws can prevent shootings from taking place.

  11. I think these attacks are terrible and should not be happening. There should be stricter gun laws everywhere and we should also try to promote better mental health so we don't have these kinds of people that want to commit acts of terror.
