President Kim Jong-un of North Korea has been invited by and will be visiting Chinese President Xi Jinping. He will spend the next two days in China including his 35th birthday, which is today. Last June President Kim met with President Trump for the first time and a second meeting will likely come this year. Mr. Kim had tight security upon his exit from North Korea, which included preventing people from seeing the train he took to Beijing. This will be Mr. Kim's fourth visit to China in the past year after none in his first six years as North Korea's president. He may be exploring diplomatic and economic relations beyond what South Korea or the United States can offer. One goal that President Trump has is to denuclearize the Korean peninsula.

Discussion Questions:
1. Do you see President Kim having diplomatic relations with China, the U.S. or both in the future?
2. Is the goal to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula a good one and what else should President Trump focus on in North Korea?
3. Would meetings involving China, North Korea, South Korea, Japan, and the U.S. make sense or is it better if the nations interact with each other bilaterally?

  1. it is surprising and questioning how he didn't want anybody to know the train he even traveled on.

  2. North Korea will most likely continue to have diplomatic relationships. As for with America, it is unpredictable.

  3. I can see North Korea having a diplomatic relationship with China and the US because President Kim seems to want to expand his countries diplomatic relations.

  4. I feel that President Trump's idea of denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula is a good idea in trying to protect & keep people safe, but to follow through with it would be highly dangerous and risky to do in reality. Documentaries about the Harlem Globetrotters visiting North Korea in 2013 all reveal North Korea's secrecy of how they treat their people, the lack of knowledge their people have on the world and basic everyday life there, hinting at the fact that nobody really knows what's going on in that country. Instead of putting everyone at risk, Trump should focus more on keeping good relations with all countries, mainly for the sake of the United States--especially countries that have the ability to put any country and its people at risk.

  5. I think that meetings involving China, North Korea, South Korea, Japan, and the U.S. make sense because there won't be miss interpretations of these visits. Instead of Mr. Kim needing to attend many meetings with security they could have one secure meeting for the many nations where they can all plan. Instead of having to sneak around and cause suspicion. (like nuclear warfare) This way, they can develop relations and better organization. Had China and Japan been there and had input, the results may have been different.

  6. I feel that it was a smart idea for Trump to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula. He is taking into consideration the health and safety but as long as he and everyone communicate everything should work out without having any dangerous problems

  7. I believe that in the future president Kim will have relationships with both the U.S and China. He is thinking about everyone's aspects of this and how our safety plus our surroundings will feel about it. I feel that they will because president Kim wants to expand and make their country bigger
