A court in Egypt sentenced an Egyptian TV presenter to 12 months in prison due to an interview with a gay sex worker. The presenter, Mohammad al-Gheity was found guilty by an Egyptian court for encouraging immorality in Egypt. The interview aired in August 2018 and al-Gheity was fined a flat fine of $170. However, from there a private lawyer pressed charges resulting in the 12 month sentence. In Egypt homosexuality is not illegal but it is highly frowned upon buy the conservative Muslims that make up most of the population. Also, in 2017, a group of Egyptians were arrested for raising a LGBTQ+ rainbow flag in a central square. The history of homophobia in Egypt has truly shone through in this unfair case.
Discussion Questions:
1. Should al-Gheity go to prison?
2. Was his crime truly encouraging immorality?
3. Should homosexuality be negatively portrayed by the government?

DeleteEven though homosexuality is illegal in Egypt, I personally believe that Al-gheity should not go to jail or receive any punishment because neither side did anything that put the other person in harm or purposely abused them. He shouldn't go to jail for interviewing just a human being.

DeleteThe purpose of the interview could have been not related to promoting LGBTQ+. Even still, he shouldn't go to jail since it's not illegal, while still being frowned upon. He didn't actually encourage immorality, since he was interviewing, not explicitly supporting. For negatively portraying homosexuality, it really varies on the religion the government is based on. If the government is based on homophobic principles, then it could be justified, but if it isn't illegal then it shouldn't be negatively portrayed.

DeleteI don't believe that the people who talked to the Gay worker or the people who rose up the pride flag should have been sent to jail. They did what they wanted to and what they believed was right. People should only be sent to jail if they do something really bad. Homosexuality is legal so things like this are not something to go to jail for.
ReplyDeleteI don´t think he should be put in jail because he did nothing wrong. He was only embracing the LGBT community.
ReplyDeleteThat was completely unnecessary. Although it’s frowned upon in the country, the news caster going along with it like everyone else, sets a bad impression and will show people that there is no change because no one is willing to take the risk
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, al-Gheity shouldn't be arrested because he wanted to do something that he believed was right which was embrace the LGBT community. He didn't cause any harm to anyone so he just be getting arrested.

Deletei think that the sentance in prison for a year is a little too much. its not like the interview was wrong it wasnt even illegal, so he should just be fined money.
ReplyDeletethe goverment is trying to help these people feel comfortable in the society. this is a unfair ruling but it looks good for the goverment defending the gay society.
DeleteIn my opinion, even though its against the law to be homosexual in Egypt, Al-Geity should not be punished because no one was affected or harmed. Thus, if there is to be any punishment, i think he should only be fined.
ReplyDeleteNo, I don't think al-Gheity should go to prison just because he is gay. Everyone is their own person, so saying that someone has to get thrown into prison for being gay is just really messed up. He was just embracing who he was as a whole person. :) -Rani M.
ReplyDeleteAl-Geity shouldn't be punished because it is not against the law in Egypt to be homosexual or embrace people of the lgbt+ community. No one was truly harmed by one interview of a gay man.

DeleteI think that the presenter does not deserve to be sent to prison. It is not illegal, and there is nothing wrong with the lgbt community.

1.I don't think al-Gheity should go to jail even if it is frowned upon it is not illegal, so he shouldn't be sentenced.
ReplyDelete1. No i dont think he should go to jail because it is his job to interview people and it shouldn't matter what kind of people he interviews.
