Drone Sighting Disrupts Major U.S. Airport

On January 22, 2019 at approximately 5pm, the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) received two reports from incoming flights in Newark and stated that a drone had been sighted at about 3,500ft above Teterboro, New Jersey. An air pilot, told air traffic control that the drone came within 30ft (9cm) of his aircraft. Even though he was flying through Teterboro airport, a nearby private facility, the officials grounded Newark International flights as a precaution to delay the flight. Although, drones had been said to be a large considerable menace for the Aviation industry, it has affected the travel of an estimated 140,000 people between the month of December 19th through the 21st. At least two people were arrested over this assault but they were released without charge due to no other arrests being made after the incident. However, officials say they may suspect hundreds of drones that aren't yet registered by their owners.

Discussion Questions

1. How can a drone cause so much dramatic chaos?

2. How will the police catch the drone menace?

3. What are the limitations for these drones in order to prevent Airport disruption?

  1. 1. It can maybe fly into the engine and the plane could crash, catch the pilot off guard, cause confusion and delay flight.
    2. They could check the cameras all over the town to see where the drone had left off from.
    3. Drones are really expensive so I think that nobody would really be willing to lose their drone or get arrested for a reason like this.

  2. 3. I believe that the limitations of these drones that can prevent Airport disturbance is to ban flying in the area. Just as the watch towers in the airports can detect the planes with scanners, they should be able to detect drones and notify the aircraft of its disturbance. The drone's controller should be notified that he is braking law and is endangering the lives of all the people in the planes.

  4. 1. the drone can cause lots of chaos because the drone can fly into the engine and cause major destruction to the plane and can kill the people on board

  5. The drones should have an altitude max. If the drone goes above the restricted height, it should lock up and fall. There should be a warning system on all drones saying that it is too high.

  6. The drone was obviously flying in the wrong place, and it could have been seen as a threat because it could of had anything in it.

  7. 3)Drones should have a tracking device, flight height max and min, and know what around to not hit them.

  8. Drones can be very powerful. They can surveillance areas that shouldn't be, transport and carry anything on them, and be an obstacle in the air. These reasons can make drones unsafe and dangerous. One fact that amazes me is that the drone was 3500 ft above ground.

  9. Drones can be seen as an invasion of privacy, danger, or a distraction to pilots. Flying drones could run into planes and cause damage and delays. Drones should not be aloud anywhere near airports without authorization.

  10. According to the article, the police will track down the drone by looking for the source starting with radio signals. The drone was seen so often that there would have to be a someone changing the batteries and so the police are working on finding the drone that has been missing since Thursday night.

  11. A drone can cause of so much dramatic chaos because they are smaller than planes and can get caught in the engine and be the reason the plane crashes and could hurt a lot of people.

  12. The signal that a drone user has from the users console can interfere with the control tower signal to airplanes. This can cause traffic backup or planes crashing into each other on the runway. The drone when flying can crash into the airplane window causing the pilot to crash.

  13. 1.It invades people's privacy
2.put trackers on the drones and follow it back to it's original location
3.they can't interfere with the planes that are carrying people

  14. Drones should only be used with authorization, even when not near an airport, It still violates people's privacy and is a danger hazard.
