In 90 days Abdelkader Bensalah is set to succeed Abdelaziz Bouteflika as president of Algeria, who resigned last week. While most did not support Bouteflika, they aren't happy with Bensalah being his replacement, wanting a more radical change. As soon as Mr Bensalah was announced, the people took to the streets to protest the new interim president. Bensalah is seen as very close to the former president and not different enough. Algerian police have been using a water cannon against protesters.
1. Should police have used water cannons to stop the protesters?
2. Do you think that the people should have been protesting peacefully?
3. How long do you think presidents should stay in office for?

I think that using any kind of bombs is wrong, but I do think that water bombs are better than any other kind. Yes, I do think that the protesters should have done this peacefully, that way there is no use for water bombs. I think that 4 years, just like the US is fair and long enough for a president to be in office
ReplyDeleteI don't think that the police should be using water cannons because the they are a weapon. The weapons are very ineffective against the protestors and as long as the protest continues without harm, they should be able to go on peacefully.
ReplyDeleteThe president should have one term of four years.
ReplyDeleteI think that protesters could done this in a more peaceful way. I think that 4 years is a good amount for someone to be president. Water bombs should not be used and bombs should never be used.
ReplyDeleteI think that the police should have taken a different amorach no types of weapons should be used that could potentially harm people. However protesters should have also taken a more peaceful approach.
ReplyDeleteUsing water cannons rather than other sources of force was still fine, but I don't think they should have tried to stop them. The people could have protested more peacefully, even though the president wasn't widely agreed upon. 4 years or less seems like a reasonable time, especially if people are upset with their current one
