This past Saturday, January 26th, marked the death of five innocent people in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Dakota Theriot was currently in a relationship with 20-year-old Summer Ernest. At the time, he was staying with her family for several weeks. Around 9 p.m., Dakota killed his girlfriend Summer, her father Billy Ernest and her brother Tanner. Theriot then drove to his family's house and killed his mother, Elizabeth and his father, Keith.
He then proceeded to drive to his grandma's house, where he was apprehended and arrested by local authorities without any other incidents occurring. His motives are still unknown, but he was kicked out of his parent's house a few weeks before their murder over his excessive use of drugs.
He is now in custody and awaiting trial on five counts of murder in varying degrees.
In my opinion, this is another tragic loss due to gun violence. It's unfortunate that somebody with clear mental issues and who constantly used drugs had access to a gun and was able to use it to kill innocent people.
Questions:
1) What do you think proper punishment is for Dakota? Do you believe he deserves the death penalty? Why or why not?
2) What could have been done to prevent this and other similar shootings? Do you think more gun control is necessary?
3) What do you think pushed Dakota over the edge and caused him to kill five people? Would increasing mental health help or gun control do more good?

I think he does deserve a death penalty because he has killed five people like one okay just go to jail but because he kept doing it and never learned his lesson he deserves to be in jail for his life time but if he misbehaves in jail then he should have a death charge
ReplyDeleteMost motives for shootings have either been the use of drugs, or they were having issues with there family and friends not giving them any attention. Something that could of helped him especially was instead of his family kicking him out of the house they could of contacted people to help him get over his drug abuse. Guns should only be available for people who will use it for good use and good use only.

DeleteI think this man deserves the death penalty because he took away 5 innocent lives which affects their friends and families. Because of his drug use, the killer had a motive which could've been prevented through therapy but it was not considered. Because of his crime, the killer should face the death penalty for his wrong doings which isn't negotiable.
ReplyDeleteSomething that could've been used to prevent this and other similar shootings is to not give guns out to people who suffer from drug use and or anything along those lines. Yes, I do believe more gun control is necessary just so situations like this don't happen to innocent people and their families/friends. :) -Rani M.
ReplyDeleteI believe that this specific person should be sentenced to death if there is a significant amount of evidence against him. If there is without a doubt that this man committed these crimes and has killed 5 people, he should deserve to "have a taste of his own medicine" and die with the victims he killed

Increasing the amount of mental health help available to people would do lots of good.

ReplyDelete2. I believe that this situation could have been prevented by putting out strict laws on guns. Gun control is very necessary.

I think that there should be more control over guns, so people with bad intentions don't get a hold of them. There should also be more help for people with mental issues.

2- This and other gun violence incidents could have been prevented if we had stricter gun laws. Gun regulation is definitely necessary to prevent future lives lost.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion i think he deserves a death penalty because he took 5 innocent lives away for no reason. Also for his use of drugs.
ReplyDelete1. I think he deserves the death penalty due to the fact that he has murdered 5 people with no clear motive, and he could be a threat to society if ever released again.
ReplyDeleteI think he deserves the death penalty because he is 1 person. 1 person that killed 5 other people. 5 people lost their lives because of him. There isn't a clear reason why he did it but, even if he only took 1 persons life he should still get the death penalty.
ReplyDeleteI think that because he murdered 5 people with no motive/reason and with the use of drugs it is fine. I also believe that the gun laws need to be way more stricter because the gun violence has gotten way out of hand.
ReplyDelete1. I do not believe that Dakota should deserve the death penalty until the have found his motives and gone through some mental tests, etc. Because there are so many reasons this could have occured. This happened for reasons unknown which means he could be innocent, again this is just a guess/assumption, but he if so he could be put in and Asylum or mental hospital. But i do not think that they should resort to the death penalty so fast.
ReplyDeletei think this a correct way to go about it because he did kill five people. i think that this could have been prevented if the gun contol laws were way stricter like all other laws.
